designing immersive 3d experiences

The first of its kind on the market, Designing Immersive 3D Experiences is a forward-focused book that will serve as a guide to designers and also developers on the best practices for 3D design for extended reality (XR). While this industry is not new, many of the current advances in XR are new and pose new challenges for designers that they have never faced before. For example, how do you go from designing a printed brochure where you have full control of the full layout and experience for the user to then designing for augmented reality where you have to design content to work within uncontrollable environments? This book tackles this challenge and more by looking at the full design process and the considerations that need to be made along the way. Interwoven is the topic of designing for 3D, which is a rapidly growing field in the design industry right now, as are discussions of how these skills can be implemented to make useful and problem-solving immersive experiences.

Designing spatially needs to be looked at from a holistic perspective. This approach is laid out in an accessible way by breaking down complex topics and challenges into digestible parts, as well as by relating new XR design concepts to foundational 2D design concepts that readers are already familiar with. The topics of prosthetic knowledge and imposter syndrome are discussed within the first chapter in an effort to remind readers that they don’t have to learn every last nuance of this new field immediately, just what they need to know for each step and then build on that as they need it. In addition, the discussion encourages designers to resist the urge to feel like they shouldn’t be designing in the XR space when they experience self-doubt.
